Pushing Back Against Woke

Editors Note: In his letter to the editor of the Journal of Computational Physics published by Elsevier, Patrice Nishikawa (known scientifically as Etienne Forest) deconstructs the absurdity of the “Inclusion and Diversity Pledge” that the Journal made in May 2022 to reflect the “gender, geography, race & ethnicity, and age diversity of members of the field in which it sits.” The Journal’s pledge is based on an Elsevier policy to “increase diversity and inclusion in Elsevier’s journal editorial processes, remediate unfair bias, and drive greater equity in publishing and research more broadly.”

Nishikawa had been invited by the Journal to review a submission by two authors as part of a peer review. As he accepted the invitation online, he was sent to a web questionnaire about his gender and racial identification. Nishikawa points out the absurdity of a physics journal trying to advance a social justice agenda and informs the Journal’s editor that he has no right to ask questions about Nishikawa’s sexual life.

What can one do when reality has become so absurd that satire can’t keep up? Most submit, as Nishikawa points out in a quote by Mathieu Bock-Côté, in order not to be branded as conservative villains. But Nishikawa has decided that it is time to fight IDE (inclusion, diversity, equity), which, he says, in the guise of achieving a noble goal, is a fascist and racist poison whose final goal is the destruction of Western civilization. And so he turned down the request to review the article and asked that his name be removed from the list of reviewers.

Like Nishikawa, we must all become refuseniks to the totalitarian ideology of Woke, implemented through the weapon of IDE (or DIE – perhaps a better acronym that reflects the impact on our civilization). We must all find our own ways to resist. We can resist as writers, editors, teachers, parents, civil servants, nurses, doctors, truckers… Because if we are going to put a stop to this nonsense, we the people will have to do it ourselves. Most of our leaders are part of the problem.

Pushing Back Against Woke

What follows is my personal opinion and in no way reflects the opinion of my employer.

A French version follows.

To whom it may concern :

The included pdf is addressed to Professor Stéphane Zaleski in his public capacity as an editor of the Journal of Computational Physics published by Elsevier. None of my complaints are addressed to him personally.

10,000 scientists, hundreds of universities, 100 countries, speakers of 100s of languages practicing countless number of religions built the Large Hadron Collider, perhaps the most complex machine ever built by man. I resent the fact that some bureaucrat, excreted out of the humanities, will tell us, physicists, about diversity, inclusion and equity when they are too dumb to tell apart what a 1 day old rat sees immediately: a mom and a dad.

Many American neuroses are now being imported to Canada and Europe. The George Floyd episode, the collapse of Roe vs Wade, cultural appropriation,etc... are all American neuroses that Canadians and Europeans are importing out of context within their own cultures as if they were the 51st state of the USA. The IDE ideology and its weaponized post-modernist underpinning is one of the principal vector of contagion. As a naturalized Japanese, I will do my best to oppose the introduction of these diseases into Japan.

In Canada, an Ontario court forbade mathematics tests for high school teachers and the central government is massacring the French language all in the name of IDE. This is explained in the accompanied pdf.

In fact, the IDE Canadian remodeling of French, by the government, is a far more injurious attack on the French language than the feminization that was promoted by the Quebec and Belgium governments and resisted for a long time by the French government. You might as well send the Immortals of the French Academy to an epuration tribunal.

The French and the Academy pride themselves in the fact that French has a precise vocabulary. However the IDE ideologues of the Canadian government are roaming the dictionary to replace words with obvious grammatical gender with words where the gender is hidden in an attempt to construct a non-binary French vocabulary. Imprecise? Who cares : diverse and inclusive.

These IDE ideologues must be fought mercilessly at every level. The slippery slope is easy to see : it is called Canada.

I hope that Professors Rémi Abgrall (Editor in chief) and Stéphane Zaleski will realize, via the Canadian example, where kowtowing to IDE can lead to.

Accordingly, I am publicly announcing my desire to cease all interaction with journals that promote the IDE ideology.

Anyone can use or distribute the content of this email and, of course, reveal my identity. I am no longer the coward I was in 1990 when I first notice this nonsense in Berkeley, California. It is time to grow a pair and fight for reason and the scientific method.

I do not base my conclusion on philosophical musings: smarter people are doing it. But I will say that equity in particular, as in equality of results, is a vicious concept on evolutionary grounds. We are not ants. How can evolution deniers of the woke left, the proponent of tabula rasa, explain that less 0.15% of the world population received 22% of all Nobel prizes? (See PS below) What does Elsevier intend to do about this flagrant violation of equity?

So, as a scientist would do, I look empirically at the aberrations that are now happening in countries like Canada that have adopted the IDE ideology. The results demonstrate that IDE is de facto injurious to the scientific method.

Living in East-Asia, it is clear to me that the scientific method, as an epistemological tool to extract knowledge from fairy tales, is perhaps the only import from the West that is universally accepted. If you do not believe me, go and ask the Chinese or Japanese about “democracy, Human rights, Christianity or Natural Law”. And yet, the purveyor of IDE are doing their damned best to destroy it in the West. Shame, shame, shame.

Best regards,

Patrice Nishikawa

(scientifically known as Etienne Forest)

P.S. On a final note, notice that 208 out of 930 Nobel laureates are Azhekanaze Jews. In fact, they mostly come from Central and Eastern Europe and are thus part of even a smaller minority. These people received 22% of the Nobel prizes with less than 0.15% of the World population. They are at a minimum 150 times over represented. Will Elsevier, for the sake of equity, work very hard to make sure that Ashkenazim represent no more than 0.15% of the people involved in scientific publications? Can this have anything to do with intelligence or superior culture or is it due to a vast Zionist conspiracy?

Sorbonne, Paris

Editor at the Journal of Computational Physics

Dear Sir :

It is with great regret and sorrow that I write this letter.

As you know, I accepted to review an article by two authors who will remain anonymous since I still have some respect for the anonymous peer review process. I included them in a blind carbon copy of this email.

I am a Japanese citizen fully supporting the rights of any group here in Japan, including transgenders, native Korean residents, Burakumin, homosexuals, women, men and others, to live in a place free of bigotry and unreasonable discrimination.

I am proud to say that in our laboratory we have made efforts to support women and that our female scientists are not expected to make tea for their male colleagues as is often the case in Japanese companies. We had several native Koreans as well. I do not know about Burakumin since the Japanese government forbids, at this point, data collection on Burakumin to prevent discrimination.

However recent changes in Elsevier force me to rescind my offer to review. The authors can still contact me and send me a preprint for private comments. I will destroy the pdf I obtained from Elsevier.

As I accepted to review, I was sent to a web questionnaire concerning my gender, ancestry, ethnic and racial identification which I nonchalantly answered. Notice that Elsevier does precisely what the Japanese government wisely forbids in the case of the Burakumin.

I then consulted the Journal's site and read :

Elsevier states in its FAQ :

By inviting Editorial Manager users to self-report their gender identity, ethnic origins, and race (diversity data), Elsevier facilitates an evidence-based approach to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in research. By analyzing diversity data, Elsevier aims to increase diversity and inclusion in Elsevier’s journal editorial processes, remediate unfair bias, and drive greater equity in publishing and research more broadly.

Moreover, I noticed that the sudden change was triggered by a May 2022 Pledge :

6 May 2022

Inclusion and Diversity Pledge

This journal pledges to improve diversity on the editorial team; in 2022 we will be working to ensure the journal accurately reflects the gender, geography, race & ethnicity, and age diversity of members of the field in which it sits. This commitment sits within Elsevier’s broader ongoing inclusion & diversity efforts. Equity and inclusion in publishing is critically important for scientific excellence and innovation. We believe passionately in the power of an inclusive publishing environment, not only to do what is right, but to enrich, strengthen and advance us all.

This reveals that your journal has been infiltrated and poisoned by the same woke nonsense that is destroying my former country—Canada, a virus which is also destroying the USA.

It is not the role of the Journal of Computational Physics to erase systemic racism, sexism or any whateverism unless it is proven to originate due to a policy within its rank. In particular, it has been my experience that physicists as well as other people of the STEM field, have done everything to favor the inclusion of any minority. Euler welcomed Mr. Le Blanc (Sophie Germain), Hilbert defended Emmy Nöther. My alma mater, the University of Maryland, in the 1980s already, bent standards to allow women and blacks into the doctoral program. I know this for a fact as a female friend of mine benefited from the exceptions that were made to females.

The role of your journal is to publish results in computational physics if the reviewers and the editorial staff feel that they advance the state of science, i.e, the pursuit of Truth about the material world that surrounds us.

The IDE ideology (or DIE as I prefer to name it) has shown its true face in countries most infected by it. IDE does not believe in a unique truth we ought to pursue. It is infected by post-modernism--- a true form of intellectual terrorism. My truth, your truth, my way, your way, everything goes. It is anti-scientific at its core: female glaciology, indigenous theory of light, etc...

In Canada, the central government of Justin Trudeau is now subsidizing « work », via its science funding agency, whose purpose is to decolonize science, in particular, at Concordia University, researchers have received funds to decolonize the theory of light and introduce the wisdom of our indigenous population. It also cut funds to departments who do not have the right percentage of “marginalized” forcing Laval University, in Quebec City, to explicitly create positions where white men are excluded prima facie.

Do I have to tell you that the theory of light (QED) is the most precise theory ever devised by man? A tapestry woven with a single thread to quote Feynman? What can the Cree Indian way of knowing can add to this?

Do I need to remind you that Tycho Brahe, a Copernican, had the entire Copernican solar system rotating around the Earth precisely because our traditional indigenous beliefs, Genesis, interfered with his intellectual faculties?

Do you think, if I review the paper you sent to me, that I should take into account the wisdom of my Merovingian ancestors, maybe Clovis or the good king Dagobert who had his breeches inside out, have something to say about symplectic integration? And as a white Japanese citizen, obviously from a “oppressed” minority, should I throw in the pronouncements of Genghis Khan, Attila the Hun or even Yoshida Kenko in my review?

Actually I would put in my review the indigenous opinion of Fukuzawa Yukichi who famously wrote that Japan has nothing to learn from other Asian countries and that Europe is the most advanced civilization. He was actually correct at that time and this lead to the fast industrialization of Japan while Korea and China unfortunately languished.

The « decolonization/indigenization», born out of the IDE infested humanity departments, is a direct attack against the scientific method, developed during the Renaissance, which Japanese, Chinese and others adopted because it works, not because they like us. No one here talks about Ainu or Okinawan ways of knowing and Chinese do not talk about the Tibetan or Zhuang way of doing physics.

Recently, Professor Englander of the University of Minnesota, has forced medical students to utter a disgusting woke pledge worthy of a Waco or Jonestone style cult (I am quoting Joseph Facal of “le Journal de Montréal”). Here is the pledge :

How long will it be before Elsevier forces us to respect the indigenous ways of knowing?

At the prestigious University of British Columbia, “Lorna June McCue was denied tenure and ultimately dismissed after 11 years at the university in part because of her failure to submit a single piece of peer-reviewed research during that time.

She claimed that requesting publications was a way for the white patriarchy to control the members of an oppressed oral culture. As a person of French and German ancestry, I have Celtic blood, should I demand the same privilege in account of my Celtic roots and request tenure as a druid, as the Getafix (Panoramix) of my university? Should I claim discrimination if the Japanese refuse me tenure?

The fact that her case was considered by Canadian courts is outrageous and again an attack against the scientific method.

Judges Backhouse, Tzimas and Nishikawa of the Ontario Superior Court ultimately held that mathematics tests for high school teachers impose burdens on racialized candidates that had the effect of reinforcing, exacerbating or perpetuating disadvantage. They were declared unconstitutional.

( Actual court judgment https://www.canlii.org/en/on/onscdc/doc/2021/2021onsc7386/2021onsc7386.pdf)

This judgment is loaded with falsehood such as assumptions that typically ignore the multivariate statistical complexity of social issues. In any event, do you think that my mixed-race children would have been better in Ontario with a diverse professoral corps of incompetent teachers of mathematics rather than with the 100% Japanese staff of East-Asian race of my city of Tsukuba? My poor children undoubtedly suffered in the racially « pure » environment of Japanese high schools! I should also point out that in the decrepit educational system of Ontario, teachers often have to teach outside their own specialty : this does not bode well if, say, an African competent French teacher who cannot do algebra, finds himself forced to teach high school mathematics. The IDE fanatics do not care since they assume their ideology to be true, their statistics to be interpreted entirely through the lens of the theories vomited out of the gender study or queer study departments of North American universities.

Requiring your reviewers to know about physics or mathematics also imposes and perpetuates disadvantages. How many of your reviewers in symplectic integration are black women? I bet zero. Following the wise judgment of this Canadian court, infested by IDE judges named by PM Justin Trudeau such as Sandra Nishikawa, should you drop any qualifications for your reviewers? It is far more important to the IDE crowd to have a diverse incompetent body of reviewers than competent ones. Since science is an arbitrary social construct of the white patriarchal tyranny, who cares about competence? Actually, we just need to redefine mathematics to be what the marginalized groups are good at. My math, his math, her math, their math...

As this shows, the need for the very journal of which you are an editor is under attack in countries like Canada, under attack by judges in the highest court of its largest province, Ontario.

And what about language itself? Your journal already states :

« When coding terminology is used, we recommend to avoid offensive or exclusionary terms such as "master", "slave", "blacklist" and "whitelist". »

I will not tell you that it is a slippery slope, I will prove it using IDE infested Canada once more as an example. First of all, you will agree that French does not have a widely used Thesaurus, dictionary of synonyms. This is because the French people pride themselves in using always the correct term--- treating learned language like mathematical language. Therefore, French avoids word salads and the French Academy even removes occasionally words : « Canceller » was cancelled in French.

The Canadian government is now trying to impose a new Orwellian language:

  • il et elle must be replaced by iel

  • ceux et celles by celleux

  • etudiants, étudiantes by étudiant.e.s.

  • tous by toustes

  • député by parlementaire (screw the French Academy and get the non-binary Thesaurus out)

What about the Master Equation for Markovian processes, or worse, what about « l' équation maîtresse », does it imply that the equation has a vagina and is the secret lover of someone? What about canonical and translation, two terms derived from the Catholic Church, should I stop promoting evil and tyrannical Christianity and stop using these adjectives? What about the word « World » itself which etymologically contains « wer » as in virility? Does it imply that the world has testicles? Finally, the more I am educated the less I can speak thanks to the IDE cabal.... Oops, cabal is an antisemitic slur! Actually, the IDE wants to erase Western culture and therefore no one, in the near future, will understand any of the reasons behind these words. How many students of mathematics know the religious origin of translation? Ignorance is strength as Orwell prophetically wrote.

Can one imagine the works of La Fontaine or Molière translated into the Orwellian language proposed by the IDE ideologues of the Trudeau government?

Mathieu Bock-Côté, the Quebec intellectual who is popular in your country, wrote on 10/18/2022 in relation to the usage of this « inclusive » language:

(My translation : But anyone who refuses to do so will be seen as an ugly conservative. Most fear this bad reputation. So they submit.)

Moreover, should the Chinese (and the Japanese) be forced to drop the character 妓 for prostitute because it implies that all sex workers are women (女)? For example, I propose that the racist and mysoginistic Chinese use my inclusive neologism:

I am sure that the Academica Sinica in Taiwan and the Academy of Sciences in Beijing will rush to offer me a job as an "inclusive" editor!

Where do we stop in attacking and destroying our traditions in the name of an ideology that attacks the true diversity of opinion which, with free speech, is absolutely essential to the scientific method? A scientific method which is perhaps perhaps the only Western value accepted universally around the globe.

Bock-Côté is correct. IDE is a vicious ideology, which, as you can see, is attacking in Canada the genius of the French language in the name of the various noble goals it pretends to pursue.

I have been aware of this post-modernist, post-national and anti-scientific nonsense since I started my career in Berkeley in 1985.

The anti-reason post-modernist crowd that now pollutes every segment of Western society interprets the lack of “oppressed” people in the STEM as a proof that the STEM was socially constructed to oppress and control the poor racialized minorities, except the Jews and the East-Asians who, for some reasons, now benefit from White oppression. This is why we have now female glaciology, female versions of introductory physics, indigenous theory of light, etc...

IDE, infiltrating itself in the guise of achieving a noble goal, is a fascist and racist poison whose final goal is the destruction of Western civilization.

I spoke against this, now I must act and cease to be a coward.

Therefore, I request that you take my name out of the pools of reviewers.

Finally, I want to add that if I were to review, I would prefer a blind review. To quote the insane British Columbia Human Right code, I do not care about

Indigenous identity, race, colour, ancestry, place of origin, religion, marital status, family status, physical or mental disability, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, or age of that person or that group or class of persons. “

In fact, even if your two authors were extreme right wingers or even murderers awaiting execution, I would review their article on its own merit. It is my duty to judge their scientific contribution, not their characters and certainly not their sexual habits or gender identification. It is of no concern to me and it should be of no concern to Elsevier. Certainly, you have no right to ask me questions about my sexual life. NONE.

I reject the concept of IDE completely as presently applied and in particular its underlying assumption that we are born tabula rasa. Quite to the contrary, this lack of equity, say between male and female, which is almost certainly largely innate given the level field provided in the West and Darwinian evolution, and thefore is not something to be addressed by a journal of computational physics.

IDE is a vector carrier of a poisonous anti-scientific ideology.

Sincerely yours,

Etienne Forest

Cher Monsieur :

By inviting Editorial Manager users to self-report their gender identity, ethnic origins, and race (diversity data), Elsevier facilitates an evidence-based approach to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in research. By analyzing diversity data, Elsevier aims to increase diversity and inclusion in Elsevier’s journal editorial processes, remediate unfair bias, and drive greater equity in publishing and research more broadly.

Euler a accueilli M. Le Blanc (Sophie Germain), Hilbert a défendu Emmy Nöther.
